FANTASTIC TRIPS TO GREATWORTH HALL FARM

Year 5 have had two fantastic trips to Greatworth Hall Farm this week! Pupils from Sycamore and Beech thoroughly enjoyed their visits where they learned so much in many fun and creative ways!

Trundle wheelPutting their Maths skills to good use, pupils used trundle wheels to measure the perimeter and area of one of the sheep fields. This required them to measure accurately and then use their arithmetic strategies to make the calculations. In the field, they met their Dashwood sheep – Daisy Dashwood – who we will track through the year and we look forward to her lambing early next year! We also had the opportunity to hold and stroke the soft feathers of the hens. As we walked in the fields, we paused to look at the beautiful trees that line it and we used our learning from this term’s Literacy; which focused on metaphors, similes and personification; to create some descriptions of the autumn trees. Here are some of the creative ideas our pupils came up with:

The leaves were scattered gold,

The trees were bronzed giants,

The branches were arms holding their golden treasures,

The leaves are bright fire.

Victorian artefactsLinked to our Victorian topic, we also loved looking at Victorian artefacts and for those that we did not recognise, trying to work out what they were and what they were used for.

As always, the cooking sessions were so fun! We learned about where the ingredients come from linking to what ingredients would have been available during the Victorian era and what items would not have been readily available. The children went on to make mince pies using a Victorian recipe. They enjoyed using their chopping and mixing skills, rolling out the pastry and constructing the pies.

We had a lovely day together enjoying the beauty of the farm environment. The trip offers our pupils the opportunity to appreciate what the outside has to offer, develop a sense of awe and wonder at nature and the workings of a busy farm.

Thank you to all at Greatworth Hall Farm – Rosie, Jane and all the team – for the wonderful experiences and opportunities that they provide for us at Dashwood.

Marley: I’ve done so much today. I did maths, and literacy and cooking too!

Adrian: I can’t believe it; I actually held a chicken!

Tulisa: The pastry on my mince pie is yummy!
