Reception is an exciting year for the children, but also important in terms of their learning and progress. Children start Reception at the age of 4 in September and leave in the summer term making their transition to year 1. Many children begin the year unable to read and write, and finish the year being able to read simple books and write sentences.

The Reception ‘Essential Meeting’ Presentation is available as a video and to download. Lots of information about life in school including routines, uniform, PE, clubs, homework, expectations, attendance and behaviour.

A useful website is also https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/collections/starting-primary-school/1

On this page, there is some information about how our day is structured in Reception and it will also give you some information about what we are learning.

Learning to spellWe have four short carpet times a day, led by an adult. The rest of the day is independent learning time or learning through discovering. During this time, both classrooms are open along with the outside area. This allows the children to interact with others and gives them a large range of places to explore. Throughout the day the children have a mixture of adult led and child led activities to complete and areas to visit. These areas include:

• Construction• Role play - linked to our current topic • Water
• Art• Café/Snack station• Sand
• Maths• ICT • Mud Kitchen
• Writing• Small World • Finger Gym
• Phonics • Home Corner• Playdough

The Café/Snack table is also always available to the children. Each day there is a different type of fresh fruit put out along with cartons of fresh milk and water for the children to help themselves to.

All Reception children are entitled to free school meals, however some parents prefer to send a packed lunch instead.
